Module Two · What Peace Actually Is
What This Course Will And Will Not Do
You now have the pieces. Before we go further, you deserve a plain statement of what you are getting, because this is a field with a long history of promising more than it delivers.
What This Course Will Not Do
It will not make you peaceful and thereby make the world peaceful. Lesson 1.4 said this and Module Eight will prove it. The link between calm individuals and a calm world is not what the popular version claims.
It will not train you as a professional. You will not finish this as a mediator, a negotiator, or a diplomat. Those are real careers with real training and this is not that.
It will not tell you what to think about any current political question. Where this course uses real examples, and it will, it will draw them from more than one political direction on purpose.
It will not give you certainty. It will probably take some away.
What This Course Will Do
Four things.
You will understand why violence happens. Not the cartoon version where bad people do bad things, but the actual mechanisms: how ordinary people are moved into cruelty, and how arrangements produce harm that nobody chose. This is Modules Three and Four, and it is the part that changes how you read the news.
You will get better at conflict with actual people. Real, practicable, this-week skills for the second rung, including several that are the opposite of what your instincts recommend. That is Module Five.
You will learn what the evidence says actually works. There is real data on how large-scale change happens, and most people have never encountered it. You will also learn which popular actions reliably fail, including some that feel excellent to perform. Modules Seven and Eight.
You will find out where your leverage is and choose one thing to do with it. Not a general commitment to caring. One specific thing, sized to a rung you actually stand on. That is Module Ten.
The Three Claims, Repeated
From Lesson 1.4, because they are the whole promise of the inner half of this course and they will be tested in Module Eight.
Inner work will make you a more accurate observer of conflict. It will make you a less reliable recruit for cruelty. It will let you stay in difficult work long enough to matter.
Accuracy, resistance, endurance. Not world peace. Those three, and this course will not inflate them.
Who This Course Is Not For
Most courses will not say this, which is exactly why it is worth saying. If you are one of these people, you should stop now rather than at Module Six, and there is no failure in it.
If you want a meditation course, this is not one. Module One is the most of that you will get, and the practice returns only in Module Nine.
If you want your existing political position confirmed, this will annoy you. Module Six is specifically about how the groups you belong to distort what you believe you saw, and it does not exempt yours.
If you want to be told that peace is simple and that the obstacle is other people's stubbornness, this course disagrees, at length.
And if you are looking for something to do with a specific conflict happening right now in a place far from you, the honest answer arrives in Module Ten, and many people do not enjoy it.
What is left, after those, is a fairly specific reader. Somebody who suspects the shouting is not working, who would rather understand the machinery than be reassured about it, and who is willing to find out that some of their own effort has been wasted.
What This Course Is Not Sure About
A short list, offered because a course that only tells you what it knows is not being straight with you.
Nobody knows how much of what works in one country transfers to another. The evidence in Module Seven is real and it comes mostly from a particular set of cases, and researchers argue about how far it generalizes.
Nobody knows how to reliably stop a society that is already polarizing. We know a good deal about how it happens and much less about how to reverse it.
And this course does not know what a person like you can accomplish at the fourth and fifth rungs. Module Ten will make a case for working where your leverage is real, and that case is a judgment, not a finding.
What This Course Owes You
Three commitments, so you can hold this course to them.
It will show its evidence, including the parts of that evidence that are contested. Where researchers disagree, you will be told they disagree.
It will criticize its own tradition. Module Eight examines the claim that group meditation reduces violence and reports honestly on what the studies show. A course that will not audit itself has no business asking you to audit yourself.
It will not flatter you. Module Six is about how the groups you belong to distort what you believe you saw, and it applies to your groups, not only to other people's.
