Module Ten · Your Position

Which Rung Are You On

Lesson 10.1 · about 10 minutes including the exercise

Go get the list.

Not the memory of the list. The actual paper or note from Lesson 1.1, with three conflicts on it, one sentence each, and no explanation of who was right. Add the fourth item you wrote beside it in Lesson 2.3, the one you are not inside. A war, a law, an election, a story you have been following for months.

You need the original because a list you rebuild from memory is a list you have edited. You will rebuild it as a fairer person than you were. That is not lying. It is how memory works, and Module Six explained why the version you produce now will quietly favor you.

Read Them Cold

Read the three sentences the way a stranger would.

Module One told you that you would come back to this list in the final module and be surprised by what it looks like from here. That was a promise, so here is the accounting. Most people find some version of the following, and if none of it applies to you, that is information too.

At least one of the three has gone away without you ever doing the thing you were certain you would have to do. It did not get resolved. Nobody apologized. It stopped mattering, or the other person moved, or you got busy. This is worth sitting with for a moment, because at the time it did not feel like the kind of thing that stops mattering.

At least one is still exactly where it was. Same shape, same weight, and you can tell without checking.

And with at least one, you will read your own sentence and not be able to reconstruct why it burned. The words are yours. The heat is gone and you cannot get it back by trying.

There may also be one that went quiet rather than ending. You ran the test for that in Lesson 2.2. Ask what happens if the pressure comes off. If it comes straight back, nothing was settled. It was parked, it is still parked, and it has been sitting on your list for nine modules disguised as a solved problem.

The Same Test, Turned Around

In Lesson 6.1 you learned the symmetry test. Would you accept this same defense if the other side offered it, word for word, with only the names changed?

You ran it on a political argument. Run it on your list.

Take each sentence and imagine the other person in that conflict wrote it about you, in the same neutral form, with the names swapped. Does it still describe the same situation? Or does it only work in your version, because the sentence has some quiet load-bearing word in it that assumes what it is supposed to be reporting?

Module One made you leave out the justification. That was not a writing exercise. It was so that this test would work today.

About half of what people wrote survives it. That half is probably accurate and you should keep it.

Check Your Numbers

In Lesson 2.3 you wrote a number from one to five beside each item for the rung it sits on. Look at those numbers now, because you assigned them eight modules ago with a much rougher idea of what the rungs were.

Here is the test that settles it. Do not ask how big the conflict feels. Ask who would have to change for it to end.

If it ends when you change something in yourself, and nobody else has to move, it is on the first rung. If it ends only when you and one specific other person both move, it is on the second. If it ends when a group changes what it treats as normal, it is on the third. If it ends when a rule, a budget, or a law changes, it is on the fourth. If it ends when governments change what they are doing, it is on the fifth.

Two errors show up here, and they are opposites.

The first is placing a conflict a rung higher than it belongs. A stalled thing with your brother becomes a fact about how your whole family operates. This feels like insight. What it does is move a problem you have moves in to a rung where you have almost none, and the relief it brings is the relief of being let off.

The second runs the other way. A procedure at your job is failing, in the way Lesson 4.4 described, and you have spent a year treating that as a personal shortcoming and working longer hours. That is a fourth rung problem carried on the first rung by one person. It will not resolve, because effort is not the missing ingredient, and you pay the whole cost of the error.

Correct your numbers where they are wrong. Some of them will be.

The Fourth Item

Now the one you are not inside.

You gave it a number in Lesson 2.3 and it was probably a four or a five. Here is the part that Lesson 2.4 warned you about.

You are on no rung for it. Not a low rung. None. You have no relationship to anyone deciding anything, no position in any institution that touches it, and no procedure you can object to. Your understanding of it may be excellent. Understanding is not a rung. Your opinion about it does not connect to anything, and the volume of your feeling about it does not change that, and neither does the fact that the situation is genuinely urgent and people are genuinely being harmed.

What is available to you is small and unsatisfying. You can give money to an organization that is competent at the thing, which is a real contribution that will never feel like one. You can decline to spread the false version of it, which matters more than it sounds like and is the whole of what Module Six equipped you for. Beyond that, at that distance, honestly, not much.

That is the answer. It is not the whole of what has to be said.

Attention is not free. The hours and the heat you spend on the item you have no position in are not drawn from an unlimited supply. They come out of the same account that funds the three conflicts you are actually inside, where you do have moves, and where nobody else is available to make them.

Say clearly what that last part is. It is a judgment, not a finding. Lesson 2.4 told you this course does not know what a person like you can accomplish at the fourth and fifth rungs, and it does not. Nobody has measured the exchange rate between attention spent on a distant war and attention spent on your own street, and anybody who gives you a number for it is inventing it. What this course can show you is where your leverage demonstrably is. What you do with that is yours and stays yours.
